Installing Windows 7 or upgrading Windows XP or Windows Vista could be a breeze for an expert IT administrator. However, if you are not an administrator who is involved in operating system installation or OS installation than it may be a good advice to have the necessary preparations done in advance. Preparing for the Windows 7 Installation could save you time and while at the same time help you stave off unpredicted challenges or problems during Windows 7 OS installation:

  • Find your product key. The first thing that you should be keeping handy is Windows 7 Product Key for OS Installation . Finding the OS product key is as easy as locating the Windows product key on your computer or laptop. If you are unable to locate the Windows 7 product key over there, than you should look at the DVD cover in the Windows package. Lastly, look for the Windows 7 Product Key in the confirmation e‑mail. However, this would be applicable only if you you purchased and downloaded Windows 7 online. Log on to Microsoft Windows website to view and find out examples of what a product key looks like.   • Jot down computer name. If  you have been using a home or office computer network  it may be a good idea find you computer name and record it for reference later.

  • Back up your files. You may use USB Hard Disk Drive, a folder on your home or office computer network, and a DVD or CD. Windows Easy Transfer can be used to back up your files and settings. 

  • Download and run the free Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor mat be helpful in identifying compatibility issues with your hardware or programs during or post Windows 7 installation .

  • Select between 32-bit or 64-bit versions of Windows 7. The Windows 7 installation disc comes in both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows versions to suit your hardware.

  • Update Antivirus Program: Scan your computer and data after updating your Antivirus program. After the scan is over disable the antivirus program to ensure it does not interfere with your upgrade process. This is not applicable if you are installing the OS on a new computer as you can simply format your disk and proceed.  

  • Connect to the Internet. Lastly you may need to connect to Internet in order to download the latest driver updates, security updates, or installation updates as applicable. However, Windows 7 installation does not mandate an Internet connection.
